El británico Greg Rutherford ganó la medalla de oro en salto de longitud con una marca de 8.31 metros y es el nuevo campeón olímpico en esta prueba del atletismo.

El australiano Mitchell Watt se colgó la presea de plata al saltar 8.16 metros, mientras que el estadounidense Will Claye se quedó con el bronce con 8.12 metros, en un abarrotado Estadio Olímpico de Londres.
El favorito del público local, Greg Rutherford, realizó su mejor salto en su cuarto intento y se convirtió en el primer británico que conquista el salto de longitud olímpico en casi cincuenta años.
Rutherford, de 25 años, ganó así el primer gran título internacional de su carrera, tras una plata en los campeonatos de Europa de 2006 y haber sido eliminado en la ronda clasificatoria de Pekín 2008.
Rutherford llegó a Londres con la mejor marca mundial del año (junto al ruso Morgunov), 8.35 conseguidos en el mes de mayo.
